For an NFL record fifth time, Peyton Manning is your MVP. Manning also held the old record, which was four. Besides Manning, no other player has won the award more than three times. Apparently Manning won the award in a landslide.

This announcement isn’t a shock because Manning had probably the greatest offensive performance in 2013 of any player in the history of the National Football League.

The NFC Championship Game was decided when Richard Sherman made the play of the game. Then he followed it up with the quote of the day.

Sherman deflected a Colin Kaepernick pass intended for Michael Crabtree in the end zone. The ball was intercepted by linebacker Malcolm Smith with 22 seconds remaining to seal the Seahawks' 23-17 win against the San Francisco 49ers.

After the game, Sherman, known for his bold statements, took a shot at Crabtree.

List of change in Pro Bowl roster after 11 players from Denver and Seattle is unavailable

Rosters for the 2014 Pro Bowl were released weeks ago, but, as is always the case, injuries and player availability will result in additional players being called in as reinforcements.

Since the NFL moved the Pro Bowl to a week in front of the Super Bowl instead of a week after it, those playing in the title game are unavailable for the all-star festivities. The league designates alternates for such cases. With five Denver Broncos and six Seattle Seahawks heading to Super Bowl XLVIII instead of Hawaii, the league will be on the lookout for nearly a dozen fill-ins.

Injuries also take their toll. Most notably, San Francisco 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman will miss the game after suffering a severe knee injury in the NFC Championship. Injuries will also keep Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson away from Hawaii.

Pro Bowl: Alshon Jeffery to replace Calvin Johnson

Alshon Jefferey
Alshon Jefferey

Calvin Johnson will not play in the Pro Bowl and will be replaced by Chicago Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery.

The Detroit Lions receiver has struggled with knee injuries all season long, including missing two games and being severely limited in at least two others, so it makes sense that he would sit out of the exhibition in Hawaii on Jan. 26.

He is likely going to have surgery on the right knee in the offseason for a sprained knee and to clean out loose bodies in it.

Jeffery, who had a breakout season and now gets a trip to Hawaii, is a player some would argue should have been in the game in the first place.

"Just being from where I came from to where I am now, what I'm doing…it's just special to be part of the success we're having as a team," Jeffery said in a statement released by the Bears. "I want to thank my Mama and my family. I'm going to continue to make you all proud."

Jeffery caught 89 passes for 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns this season in his second year in the league. He finished sixth in the league in receiving yards, 10th in receptions and tied for 23rd in touchdowns.

Johnson, in 14 games, caught 84 passes for 1,492 yards and 12 touchdowns

GREEN BAY, Wis. – A few observations from the 49ers’ 23-20 win over Green Bay on Sunday evening:

The San Francisco 49eers are moving on. The 49ers survived severe cold and vintage Aaron Rodgers to win this game in the final seconds. San Francisco kicker Phil Dawson hit an 33-yard goal with as time expired to go to give the 49ers the win. They will play at Carolina next week. The 49ers are now 13-4 and have won seven straight games and 12 of their past 14 games.

Philadelphia Eagles retired No.5 Donoan McNabb jersey

Donovan McNabb at Lincoln Financial Field

The Philadelphia Eagles retired Donovan McNabb's No. 5 in a halftime ceremony that was notable for how upbeat it was.

The relationship between McNabb and Eagles fans was uneasy from the beginning, when a group of fans clamoring for running back Ricky Williams traveled to New York to boo the selection of McNabb in the 1999 NFL draft.

There was nothing but cheering when McNabb walked out of the tunnel and onto the field where he celebrated an NFC championship and completed a fourth-and-26 pass to help win a playoff game.

"I appreciate everything you've done for me," McNabb told the sellout crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. "No. 5 will always love you."

A chant of "Donovan, Donovan" went up, and fans held up their No. 5 jerseys. As green fireworks exploded over the stadium, a banner with McNabb's name and number was unveiled.

Safety Brian Dawkins, McNabb's teammate for 10 years, worked up the crowd and introduced the quarterback.

"It was my pleasure going to war with you all those years," Dawkins said. "From the bottom of my heart, brother, I thank you."

Over the years, McNabb was involved in a number of off-the-wall controversies involving Rush Limbaugh, Terrell Owens, Bernard Hopkins and the head of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP.

He might have swept all of that uneasiness away if he'd led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title. But the ultimate goal eluded him despite appearances in five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl.

McNabb finished as the Eagles' career leader in passing yards, attempts, completions and touchdowns.

He was the No. 2 pick in 1999, Andy Reid's first season as coach of the Eagles. After 11 seasons, Reid traded McNabb to Washington for draft picks on Easter Sunday in 2010. He played one season in Washington and part of the 2011 season in Minnesota. McNabb officially announced his retirement over the summer.

The ceremony was scheduled for Thursday night to coincide with the return of Reid. When Reid walked on the field with the Chiefs, the video screens in the stadium flashed "Thank you Coach Reid" along with Reid's career numbers in Philadelphia. Although there was discussion on sports talk radio all week about the reaction Reid would get, he was greeted with a standing ovation.

Manning plans to thanks Helton for two big assists

Manning and Helton
Manning and Helton

Peyton Manning plans to catch Todd Helton's final home game for the Colorado Rockies next week so he can pay homage to his college buddy who gave him two big assists over the years.

The first came when Manning was a homesick freshman at the University of Tennessee in 1994 and Helton, already a star in both football and baseball, took him under his wing and helped him adjust to college life.

The second came when Manning was plotting his comeback from neck problems two years ago that nearly derailed his NFL career.

Manning was prevented from seeing his team doctors or rehabbing at the Indianapolis Colts' facilities during the lockout that offseason. So, Helton arranged for Manning to use the Rockies' facilities to work out.

After missing that 2011 season, Manning switched teams and rejoined his good friend in Denver, where Helton has played his entire 17-year baseball career.

Helton announced last weekend that he's hanging up his cleats at age 40.

"I'll be there next Wednesday to see his last game," Manning said Thursday.

After listing what he admires about Helton as a pro consistency, toughness, dogged determination Manning spoke about what Helton's friendship has meant to him over the last two decades.

"He was nice to me as an 18-year-old homesick freshman up there in Knoxville," Manning said. "Todd was a big star when I got there already, a Knoxville legend, and so he took time to be nice to me, and I appreciated that."

Although Manning unseated Helton as the Volunteers' QB, they've remained close, attending each other's games when they've had the chance.

"A couple of years ago, during that lockout when I was in a strange and new situation, for him to get on that phone and call me and invite me out here to work out with the Rockies in private and use the Rockies' trainers, I'll always be indebted to him," Manning said. "Because I was in kind of a weird place, unknown, I had nobody to turn to medically because of the lockout."

Helton is in the midst of his final homestand and will make his last appearance at Coors Field when the Rockies play the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

"I'm happy for him," Manning said. "I feel like he's at peace with it. I have communicated with him. I hope he enjoys these last games, but there won't be another one like him here, I can promise you that."

Browns players shocked by Richardson trade

The two wooden lockers Trent Richardson used daily were barren, nothing left behind from his short stay with the Browns.

Face of the franchise one day. Gone the next.

Still somewhat shaken by the new front office's decision to trade Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round draft pick, the few Browns who ventured into the locker room on Thursday expressed shock at the deal, it's timing and they vowed to move forward in a season not yet three weeks old.

"It was a shock to everybody," receiver Josh Gordon said. "Everyone was in disbelief."

With an eye toward the future, the Browns shipped Richardson, the No. 3 overall pick in 2012 and one of their few players with star magnitude, to the Colts for a selection in next year's draft. But the alarming move to trade the powerful running back raised a flag for Cleveland's long-suffering fans, who view the hasty transaction as a sign that Browns' management is throwing away this season to better align itself for 2014 and beyond.

"That's not even realistic," linebacker D'Qwell Jackson said. "In this business, there is too much pressure on everyone to win. I can't even fathom that."

To offset the loss of Richardson and add depth at running back, the Browns signed free agent Willis McGahee. He spent last season with Denver, leading the Broncos with 731 yards. The nine-year veteran passed his physical as the Browns were practicing, worked out for Cleveland's coaches and signed his contract.

Like everyone, Jackson was caught off guard by Richardson's trade. Jackson had left the team's facility and was at home getting a massage Wednesday when he heard. Once the initial shock wore off, Jackson chalked it up to life with the Browns.

"I've been around here for a long time and I've seen a lot happen and that's one of those deals where it's out of your hands and out of your control," he said. "I'm not saying that he's not a good player. He's just going to be a good player for another organization, and the powers that be felt like that was the best thing for the team and we've got to move forward."

Jackson said there's no time to dwell on the trade, which came within hours of the Browns naming third-string quarterback Brian Hoyer their starter Sunday in Minnesota, and wide receiver Greg Little losing his starting job. Hoyer got the nod over backup Jason Campbell to fill in for Brandon Weeden, sidelined with a sprained right thumb.

As a captain, Jackson's duty is to keep his teammates focused.

"I think in the locker room, guys will talk about it for today and then we've got work to do," he said. "We've got a lot of studying to do, a lot of film to watch, we're trying to get the first win. So, yeah, it's going to be in the back of our minds. We wish Trent the best of luck. But we've still got a job to do.

"We have to put our hard hats on."

That was the same message delivered by Browns coach Rob Chudzinski, who reminded his players to lock in on the Vikings.

"We still have to go out and do what we do," safety T.J. Ward said. "Nothing changed for us. It's the same road. We've just got to go out there, hold it down for the defensive side of the ball."

Defensive lineman Desmond Bryant, who signed as a free agent in March, doesn't think the trade is a sign of surrender.

"Definitely not," he said. "We're out there and we put in work every day to win. This doesn't change that, so right now we're working to beat Minnesota and we're going to continue to do that. I respect the decision they made."

Jackson appreciates why some Cleveland fans are in an uproar over Richardson's departure. Once considered a building block, he wasn't around long enough to make a major impact.

"Trent was going to be the face of this organization, a high draft pick, much was expected out of him," Jackson said. "Now that he's gone, I can see the frustration of the fans. The die-hard fans thought we had something in Trent.

"That's the ugly side of the business we can't control."

Goldson's suspension reduced to $100,000 on appeal

Dashon Goldson - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Dashon Goldson - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson's one game suspension has been reduced to a $100,000 fine for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Darren Sproles of New Orleans.

The NFL announced the decision Wednesday by Matt Birk, who handles appeals of discipline of on-field punishment for players for the league and NFL Players Association.

Goldson was suspended one game without pay Monday for flagrant and repeat violations of NFL safety rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players. This will allow him to play Sunday against New England.

He was penalized for unnecessary roughness in last week's game against New Orleans for the hit. It was Goldson's fifth violation for unnecessary roughness since 2011.

Birk upheld a $30,000 fine for another Goldson helmet to helmet hit in the opener against New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland.

Goldson was an All-Pro last season with San Francisco, helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl. He joined Tampa Bay as a free agent, signing a five-year, $41.25 million contract.

If the seventh-year pro's suspension had been upheld it would have cost Goldson $264,705 in salary.

The Bucs have committed a league-high 23 penalties for 220 yards in two games. They've been flagged for six personal fouls — five for helmet-to-helmet contact and the other for a late hit on Jets quarterback Geno Smith.

Brian Hoyer to start at QB for Browns this week

Brian Hoyer - Cleveland Browns
Brian Hoyer

The Browns are up to their usual changes, just a lot earlier than normal.

Third-string quarterback Brian Hoyer will start Sunday against Minnesota in place of injured Brandon Weeden, who sprained his right thumb last week and could be sidelined for several games.

Cleveland first-year coach Rob Chudzinski surprisingly decided to start Hoyer over more experienced backup Jason Campbell. Hoyer had been listed as Cleveland's third-string quarterback since training camp opened behind Campbell.

"I feel like based on our current situation — where we're at offensively as well as getting into the game planning for Minnesota — that Brian's strengths are the best fit for this week and that he gives us our best chance to win," Chudzinski said. "The things that he does well fit what we need. For me, it's about who gives us the best chance to win."

Chudzinski did not commit to giving the starting job back to Weeden when he returns from injury.

"I'm going to leave all the options open," Chudzinski said. "Really, it's a matter of where he's at from a health standpoint and all that plays into it and where we're at and how guys are playing as well."

When he was Cleveland's offensive coordinator in 2007, Chudzinski oversaw the benching of starter Charlie Frye after the opener for Derek Anderson. The change sparked the Browns, who finished 10-6 with a record-setting offense.

Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas called Hoyer leap-frogging Campbell on the depth chart "unusual." Hoyer is the 19th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999.

Weeden injured his thumb when he banged it on the helmet of teammate John Greco during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 14-6 loss to Baltimore. The second-year starter will visit a hand specialist on Thursday, when he should get a better sense of how long he will be out.

"You never want to get hurt," said Weeden, who was sacked 11 times in Cleveland's two losses. "I don't care when it is, could be the 16th game or the first game, as a player, you want to be out there. So, yeah it is frustrating. Even though the results weren't there offensively, we were starting to do some better things.

"I want to be out there with my guys."

Weeden is confident Hoyer, who has made one career start, will give the Browns (0-2) a spark.

Hoyer said Chudzinski told him Tuesday that he would get the start. It's a dream assignment for Hoyer, who grew up in Cleveland rooting for the Browns and signed with his hometown team in May after spending last season with Arizona.

"I'm definitely excited," he said. "This is an opportunity you practice for, you prepare for. Obviously, I'm excited and I'll try to take advantage of it and try to give this team everything I've got to help us get that first win."

Hoyer made one start with the Cardinals last season after spending the three previous years in New England as Tom Brady's backup. Hoyer was third on the Browns' depth chart all summer and inactive in Cleveland's first two regular-season games.

The 27-year-old Hoyer started the exhibition finale after Campbell fell ill before the game in Chicago. Hoyer completed 24 of 35 passes for 307 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions.

Browns general manager Michael Lombardi has long admired Hoyer, who has something to prove after being waived by New England, Pittsburgh and Arizona within a nine-month span.

"Every situation is unique and this is one that when I came here, this is what I came here for — to play," he said. "You don't come here to be just a guy, and I think anybody who plays this position in this league, they want to be on the field. But unfortunately, there can only be one. It's not like there's four receivers or two tight ends or five linemen. There can only be one quarterback out there and you want to be that guy.

"And if you don't have that drive, then you really don't belong."

Campbell, who has made 71 career starts, was not available when the locker room was open to reporters.

Also, Chudzinski said wide receiver Greg Little will not start against the Vikings. Little has been plagued by dropped passes and he has been having issues off the field with several driving violations.

Dwayne Allen will miss season for Indianapolis Colts

Dwayne Allen - Indianapolis Colts
Dwayne Allen - Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts offense is built around their incredible 2012 draft class. That class took another major hit on Wednesday.

NFL Network's Michelle Beisner passed along word that starting tight end Dwayne Allen will miss the entire 2013 season. Colts coach Chuck Pagano announced Allen will undergo hip surgery, noting that Allen's in-line blocking would especially be tough to replace. Starting running back Vick Ballard was also lost for the season last week.

Allen was one of our favorite breakout candidates this year because he's the rare tight end that is an outstanding receiver and a great blocker. The Colts offense was expected to feature Allen in a Rob Gronkowski-like role and it was easy to imagine Allen as a Pro Bowl contender.

This news will put more pressure on second-year tight end Coby Fleener, but he's not nearly as strong a blocker as Allen. Look for the Colts to play with three wide receivers on the field more often. The Colts have a huge drop-off in talent at tight end after Fleener, with Dominique Jones getting snaps last week.

Allen's absence will also make new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton's life more difficult. Allen's versatility led to mismatches for the Colts. He also made it easier for Hamilton to espouse a more "balanced" offensive philosophy. With Allen and Ballard now gone, that's going to be tougher to accomplish.

Andrew Luck has to carry this flawed team more than ever.

New Steeler Fernando Velasco

New Steeler Fernando Velasco
New Steeler Fernando Velasco

Former Tennessee Titans center Fernando Velasco has signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Adam Caplan of ESPN's NFL Insiders reported Monday.

The signing comes one day after Steelers All-Pro center Maurkice Pouncey tore the ACL and MCL in his knee, ending his season.

Velasco signed with the Titans in 2008 as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia. He spent the first five years of his career in Tennessee before the Titans cut him on Aug. 31, the last day of cuts to get down to a 53-man roster.

Fernando Velasco Biography

Fernando Velasco (born February 22, 1985) is an American football center who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. He was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football at Georgia. He played high school football at Jefferson County High School in his hometown of Wrens, Georgia near Augusta. He started his first career game on October 10 in a 34-27 win against the Cowboys. He was released by the Titans on August 30, 2013. On September 9, 2013, he was signed by the Steelers.

Steelers fall to 0-2 after 20-10 loss to Bengals

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Running back Giovani Bernard slipped through the line, caught Andy Dalton's short pass, then turned and saw something shocking.

One of the NFL's top defenses had given him a big opening.

The elusive rookie turned the catch into a 27-yard touchdown on Monday night, one of his two scores that made all the difference in the Cincinnati Bengals' 20-10 victory over the struggling Pittsburgh Steelers.

''I saw green grass,'' said Bernard, a second-round pick from North Carolina. ''Once you see green grass, you've got to take it. You don't get many chances like that. When you do, you've got to take it.''

He wasn't the only rookie putting their new imprint on an old rivalry. Top pick Tyler Eifert made a 61-yard catch that set up Bernard's 7-yard run for his first NFL touchdown. Together, they gave a preview of what the Bengals (1-1) could become with two new pass catchers in the offense.

''Gio's done a good job,'' Dalton said. ''We drafted him to be versatile, move around the backfield and make big plays. And that's exactly what we've gotten out him.''

The Bengals piled up 407 yards on one of the NFL's toughest defenses, holding the ball for more than 35 minutes.

The Steelers fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2002, done in by another game of self-destruction on offense. Pittsburgh had two turnovers in scoring range and couldn't hold the ball long enough to give their defense a breather, failing to get a first down on seven of their 12 possessions.

''There's not a lot of positives going on right now,'' said Ben Roethlisberger, who was 20 of 37 for 251 yards with one touchdown and a deflected interception. ''We can't start doubting each other. Right now, there's a general feeling of being upset.''

It was a chance for the Bengals to show they've supplanted the Steelers in the AFC North. They beat Pittsburgh 13-10 at Heinz Field last December to reach the playoffs, and now have moved ahead of them again with a rare Monday night win.

Cincinnati is 10-20 in Monday night games.

''This doesn't define anything until you look back at the end of the year,'' coach Marvin Lewis said.

The Bengals put the ball in the Dalton's hands in the first half, letting him pass away while they all but abandoned the run against one of the NFL's top defenses. Dalton had an up-and-down game, finishing 25 of 45 for 280 yards.

Cincinnati's rookies provided the big plays.

Eifert got open between cornerback Ike Taylor and safety Ryan Clark for his 61-yard catch. Bernard finished the long drive with a 7-yard run, his first touchdown in the NFL, for the early lead.

The Steelers needed to get their offense moving after a horrid opener. They ran for only 32 yards and Roethlisberger was sacked five times during a 16-9 home loss to Tennessee. Worse, the Steelers lost Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey for the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament. Fernando Velasco, signed a week earlier, started in his place Monday.

They weren't significantly better in Cincinnati.

Roethlisberger got Pittsburgh's offense moving in spurts. He completed all five of his passes on a touchdown drive that pulled the Steelers into a 10-all tie at halftime, including completions of 19 and 43 yards to Emmanuel Sanders.

Shaun Suisham kicked a 44-yard field goal, and the Steelers had a chance to add to the lead in the first half. But another mistake - and they've had a lot of those already - provided the game's first turning point.

Pinned at their 3-yard line after a punt, the Steelers drove into scoring position. Roethlisberger completed a 34-yard pass to tight end David Paulson, who fumbled the ball as he was tackled. Adam ''Pacman'' Jones forced the fumble and recovered it at the Cincinnati 13-yard line.

Another of Roethlisberger's passes went off Jerricho Cotchery's hands and was picked off at the Bengals 13-yard line in the fourth quarter, essentially sealing it.

The most intriguing question: Could Steeler-turned-Bengal James Harrison leave a mark on Pittsburgh's mess of an offense?

Nope. He didn't have a sack or a tackle.

Notes: The Bengals rushed for 127 yards, with BenJarvus Green-Ellis getting 75 on 22 carries. Bernard ran eight times for 38 yards. ... The Bengals have consecutive wins over the Steelers for the first time since 2009. ... Roethlisberger was sacked twice by a defense that failed to get one in Chicago.

Week 2: Marshawn Lynch

Marshawn Lynch vs San Francisco 49ers
Marshawn Lynch vs San Francisco 49ers

Although it has yet to play a match between the Steelers and the Bengals, I will be free for you this week as the best player of the week, introduce Marshawn Lynch. With three touch down, Lynch was unsolvable enigma for the 49ers.

Lynch scored on touchdown runs of 14 and 2 yards, and added a 7-yard TD reception in the second half. Lynch finished with 135 total yards, including 98 yards rushing, to make up for quarterback Russell Wilson hitting on only two of his first 10 throws and Seattle's receivers struggling to get open. His TD run on the first drive of the second half gave the Seahawks a 12-0 lead. His TD catch pushed the advantage to 19-3 early in the fourth quarter.
