For an NFL record fifth time, Peyton Manning is your MVP. Manning also held the old record, which was four. Besides Manning, no other player has won the award more than three times. Apparently Manning won the award in a landslide.

This announcement isn’t a shock because Manning had probably the greatest offensive performance in 2013 of any player in the history of the National Football League.

Ron Rivera took the Carolina Panthers from also-ran to division champion this season, earning him the Coach of the Year award.

Longtime New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, who spent 30 years with the franchise, is retiring.

"Dante Scarnecchia is a Patriot and NFL legend who defied the phrase 'not for long,'" Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement Wednesday. "In an industry of constant change, Dante remained a fixture here for the simple reason that he helped every player reach his highest potential, regardless of whom he was, how he was acquired or how much raw talent he had. In whatever category a coach can be assessed -- evaluator, teacher, motivator, problem solver, disciplinarian, team player, winner -- Dante is as good as it gets. As many games as he helped us win and as much as we would like to work with Dante forever, we are blessed with the opportunity to have been with him as long as we were."

For the first time in NFL history, the best offense (by yards and scoring) will face the best defense (by yards and scoring) in the Super Bowl. 

This will be the fifth time since the AFL and NFL merged that the league’s top-scoring offense played the top-scoring defense in the Super Bowl, the first since the Buffalo Bills(top offense) and New York Giants(top defense) met to close the 1990 season.

The San Francisco 49ers' long road trip to a Super Bowl return will now take them to Seattle after beating the Panthers 23-10 in Carolina.

The fifth-seeded 49ers will head to the noisiest stadium in the world to play in their third straight NFC Championship game after already logging thousands of playoff miles while earning victories in Carolina and Green Bay. San Francisco split two games with their division rivals this season, winning at Candlestick Park but losing in Seattle.

LeGarrette Blount rushed for four touchdowns as the New England Patriots pulled away from the Indianapolis Colts to win 43-22 and advance to the AFC Championship game for the third straight year. 

New England beat Indianapolis by concentrating on their rushing game, benefiting from some big turnovers, and finally running away with the game after leading 29-22 going into the final quarter.

When he got around the edge, there was no one for Marshawn Lynch to hit. Directly ahead was open field, the end zone and the Seattle Seahawks' place in the NFC championship game.

 Once again, Lynch overpowered the New Orleans Saints in the postseason.

"That was maybe `Beast Mode II.' I don't know but it was a very cool way to end that game and give us the score that we needed," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.

Lynch carried 28 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns and Seattle's defense flustered Drew Brees and New Orleans in a 23-15 victory Saturday in the NFC divisional playoff game.

San Diego Chargers vs Denver Bronchos game preview and predictions

Before the wild-card weekend , the San Diego Chargers were the biggest longshots to win the Super Bowl of the playoff team . They entered their Sunday game with the Cincinnati Bengals as seven-point underdogs , getting barely arrived at the postseason as the No .6 seed . With the divisional round , approaching , though , the team stays alive , and trying to keep on their run against the Denver Broncos when the two teams meet at Sports Authority Field at Mile High .

San Diego pulled off the biggest surprise of the first round by easily beating the Bengals , 27-10 . The Chargers won in Cincinnati , that has been something no road team were capable of doing in the 2013 regular season .

The New Orleans Saints shook off the idea which they can't win while on the road in their playoff opener , though pulling off a victory at raucous CenturyLink Field in Saturday's NFC divisional matchup with the Seattle Seahawks are going to be a more daunting task .

The Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to have 16 free agents when the signing period begins, though some will be re-signed before then. Here is a list of the 16 listed by position group:

Wide receiver: Dexter McCluster, Kyle Williams. Tight end: Richard Gordon. Offensive line: Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah, Ricky Henry, Geoff Schwartz. Defensive line: Tyson Jackson, Jerrell Powe. Linebacker: Robert James, Akeem Jordan, Frank Zombo. Defensive back: Husain Abdullah, Quintin Demps, Kendrick Lewis.Long-snapper: Thomas Gafford.

Gordon and Henry are scheduled to become restricted free agents. I’m not clear on whether Powe and James would be exclusive rights or restricted free agents, though neither has a contract for 2014.

Everyone else is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

I’ll be starting to dig into this with you beginning in the next few days. I’ll have some advice for Andy Reid and John Dorsey as to what they should be doing with this list as well as the players who are under contract for 2014. I’ve already started on what they should do with quarterback Alex Smith.

For now, a couple of quick thoughts on this free-agent list:

Ideally, the Chiefs would keep Albert, their starting left tackle. But his contract demands may be out of their price range. Asamoah and Schwartz split time as the starting right guard. The Chiefs will need to keep at least one of them and Schwartz’s versatility was valuable last season.

Abdullah, Demps and Lewis are among their top four safeties. But the Chiefs will have Sanders Commings, a rookie, coming back from injuries next year. The Chiefs like him a lot.

Calvin Johnson will not play in the Pro Bowl and will be replaced by Chicago Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery.

The Detroit Lions receiver has struggled with knee injuries all season long, including missing two games and being severely limited in at least two others, so it makes sense that he would sit out of the exhibition in Hawaii on Jan. 26.

He is likely going to have surgery on the right knee in the offseason for a sprained knee and to clean out loose bodies in it.

Jeffery, who had a breakout season and now gets a trip to Hawaii, is a player some would argue should have been in the game in the first place.

"Just being from where I came from to where I am now, what I'm doing…it's just special to be part of the success we're having as a team," Jeffery said in a statement released by the Bears. "I want to thank my Mama and my family. I'm going to continue to make you all proud."

Jeffery caught 89 passes for 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns this season in his second year in the league. He finished sixth in the league in receiving yards, 10th in receptions and tied for 23rd in touchdowns.
